Saturday, March 8 - Devil's Hall & Carlsbad

No high winds last night but it did get pretty cold. There was a program about elk in the park at the visitors center at 7 pm so that gave us something to do. This morning after breakfast we did the 4.2 mile hike to Devil's Hall. It was listed as a moderate hike but 2 of the miles were walking in a wash that was nothing but rocks of all sizes. Some were like the gravel in your drive and others were huge boulders that had washes down during the rainy season. The trail in this wash was marked by rock cairns along the way. We weren't exactly sure of what we were looking for so it was lucky for us that a group of college students came along and told us that it wasn't much farther. Lucky because the sign had been washed away and we could still be on the trail looking for the Devil's Hall.

Finally, Devil's Hall

can you spot the trail markers?

After lunch we did a shorter nature trail at McKittrick's Canyon, just under a mile at .9 mile. Not a great trail as it was quite similar to every trail we had been on in Guadalupe.  From here we headed north to Carlsbad, New Mexico and Carlsbad Caverns NP. We checked in to our motel room and drove to the caverns hoping to reserve one of the cave tours for tomorrow only to find out the ticket office was closed. We plan to get there early tomorrow in hopes of securing a place on the King's Palace tour and then do a self guided tour as well. More on that next post.
