Laishley Crab shack

Andy enjoyed his root beer float, the shopping....not so much!
Punta Gorda was today's destination.  Sharon was visiting a friend she had taught with who now lives in Sarasota.  We met at Laishley's Crab Shack located right on the Peace River.  We had coconut shrimp and hush puppies as appetizers and I had a grilled grouper sandwich with sweet potato fries and Andy had a cheeseburger and fries.  Betty had fish and chips and Sharon split a cheeseburger with her friend, Elaine.  After a nice visit we took Betty shopping at Fisherman's Village and we also had some ice cream.  Everyone left happy.  We drove around and found another Plan with Tan property that Sharon belongs to and we visited Ponce de Leon Park.  We drove the hour back to our condo and everyone is just chilling before we eat.  Tonight the menu includes any and every thing left in the refrigerator and or pantry.  The weather is cooling off again so we are not completely sure what will be on the itinerary tomorrow but I'm sure it will be better than anything we would be doing back in Ohio.

Wednesday, January 30

It is hard to believe that January is almost gone as is our vacation here in Florida.  We have two more full days to get our tan on.  And today Betty did just that!  She vowed to sit in the sun for at least 4 hours today.  I hope someone back home notices.  Sharon and I found a great spot to walk and see birds right near our condo called Eagle Lakes Recreational Park.  We drove over around 9:30 this morning and much to our delight there was a 60+ co-ed softball game going on.  After watching for a short while we both decided that we might just be able to compete in this league. Behind the ball fields was a 2.5 mile paved walking path around 3 lakes.  The lake habitat had deep water as well as wetlands and there was a rich variety of water fowl everywhere we looked.  I took my binoculars and spotted a few more species to add to my list.  Next trip I'll take my good camera and get pictures of some of the many birds that I saw.

Sharon talking with our tour guide, Randy
This morning Sharon and I were out of the house by 8:45 and headed to the Rookery Bay boat launch for our kayak tour. (Well we were heading out but it was closer to 8:55 by the time we actually got to the car with all of our stuff!)  We arrived at the launch site and met our guide, Randy, who assigned us to our kayak and fitted us with our life vests.  Randy also had a volunteer to help and there were also two women who were also volunteers that were observing the tour.  I think there were 7 of us that had paid for the tour.  Once we hit the water we were given some basic paddling instructions before we headed out to the bay.  The Rookery Bay Preserve is 110,000 acres of native habitats including pristine mangrove forest, uplands and protected waters. We only saw a very small part of the preserve but what we saw was quite impressive.  Our tour was 2 hours with the first hour going out with the wind to our back.  Coming back was a bit more work paddling into the wind and going against the current.  But we both really enjoyed the trip.

After lunch we took Betty and Andy with us and went back to visit the Rookery Bay Learning Center.  It was a state-of-the-art visitors center with great hands on exhibits, lots of aquariums with local fish and a theater with an ongoing video showing the preserve.  Sharon and I did the Snail Trail, a short 1/2 mile trail through a scenic upland habitat next to Henderson Creek.  Andy and Betty found some comfy rocking chairs in the learning center and said they would wait for us.  To our surprise, as we were getting back we were met on the bridge by our companions.  Betty told Andy they should go take a walk on water.  So they walked across the bridge at the beginning of the trail.

After we left the learning center we decided to have dinner at Mel's Diner again and try one more time to see a good sunset at the beach.  Dinner was a good one again and this time our sunset was better but it was a little cooler and windier.  We are watching the Buckeyes back at the condo.  The score is a pathetic 24-24 against the Wisconsin Badgers.  GO BUCKS!!

Monday, January 28

Today was a fun day.  We were up early because housekeeping was coming so we planned to go to Billie's Swamp Safari.  We didn't give Betty many details as we were pretty sure she would back out , if we did, she admitted later that she was thinking about.  We had to drive about an hour and thirty minutes on I-75, aka Alligator Alley, to get to today's destination.  We purchased the package deal which included an air boat ride and the swamp buggy rides as well as a critter show and a live reptile show.  We started with the air boat ride and although Betty was not convinced, we coaxed her on board put her ear plugs in our driver began our air boat adventure.  He slowed after a short while to point out a large alligator he referred to as "Tiny Tim".  The scenery was absolutely beautiful and we traveled through several different habitats for nearly 30 minutes as we viewed many birds and exotic wildlife.  The highlight for me was getting a great look at a limpkin, a pretty rare bird species, and adding it to my life list.

After the air boat ride we walked to the Swamp Buggy for our 1 hour tour.  We climbed aboard, what appeared to be, a large open-air school bus on steroids for a ride through the swamp lands that are found in south-central Florida.  Most of our viewing included mammals and birds that were on land. Wild scrub cattle, water buffalo, bison, ostrich, wild turkey, an antelope and several other species that we saw but that our driver, Kirby, did not name.  Kirby took a liking to Betty, I think he thought there might be a large tip awaiting at the end of the tour, as he stopped the buggy several times, addressing Betty as the "young lady" and pointed out things of interest.  At one point he climbed a tree to get her a Resurrection Fern and gave her directions on how to keep it alive as well as how to smuggle it home.  It is a pretty interesting plant as it can go without water and survive for up to 80 years in a dried state and when water is added it will come to life as a vibrant green fern.  Kirby even drove off the path, which he said was not allowed, to get a close up look at an ostrich.  We forded a pretty sizable body of water which was also a neat experience.  After taking both rides we asked Betty which she liked best.  She said she wasn't sure, she like them both.  Victory!!

Sharon and I took the Nature Walk which was a boardwalk through the swampy wetlands.  We saw a yellow-crowned night heron, several very large alligators and a red-shouldered hawk.  It was a great day and we topped it off with an Ultimate Pepperoni Pizza at Boston's Restaurant.
