Thursday, May 22 ~Heart of Africa Opening Day~

I have to admit that I did not attend today's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Zoo's new Heart of Africa exhibit.  But I did go to the sneak preview last Saturday for the Docents and Volunteers.  I was allowed to bring 2 guests and as luck would have it my sister Judy was in town so both she and my friend Sharon joined me for the evening.  (Mr. Bichler did not want to go so don't feel too sorry for him.)  We were treated to free camel rides, giraffe feedings and cheetah runs as well as free hot dogs, chips and drinks.  We had a great time and I am really excited for everyone to see what a fantastic exhibit has been added to our already great zoo.
These young camels are just inside the entrance before the camel ride station

This young lady was trying to get the hang of walking like a giraffe, it looked painful!

Whoaaa, camel!!

No Betty White, guess Jungle Jack will do!

Animals will make appearances at the water hole at different times during the day.  We were treated by an Ardvark.

This is the boardwalk overlooking the cheetah run.  You can see the giraffe feeding station in the background.

The cheetahs were looking especially regal this evening.

Judy is ready for her African expedition

Bring your binoculars so you can see all of the animals that might not be up close.
Today, instead of going to the opening, I stayed home and did some much needed yard work.  Finished up pulling weeds around the fish pond, did some mowing and finished my home-made arbor to my new flower garden at the end of the pool.
Oh, and I rescued a baby turtle.
I'm pretty proud of my garden entry.  I planted  a Concord grape vine that I found on sale at Lowe's.  Hope it grows and eventually covers the arbor.  Andy's dad had a grape arbor on the farm.
