Monday, July 13- The End of the Oregon Trail & Lewis and Clark Interp Center

Today after a good breakfast at the Best Western Plus in Oregon City we wanted to find the interpretation center for the end of the Oregon Trail. Without too much trouble we found the center and were not disappointed. The grounds were beautiful with heritage plants and flowers in a garden and an exhibit that gave you an in depth idea of what the travelers on the Oregon Trail had to face on there trek from Independence, Missouri to Oregon Territory.

We finally tore ourselves away from the museum because we still planned to get to Fort Clatsop in time to see the activities there as well. We drove through the mountains before descending down to sea level. It was a very scenic drive. For lunch we stopped in the little town of Seaside and even walked down to the beach to put our toes in the Pacific.

After a nice lunch at the Crabby Oyster we headed north on highway 101 and on to the Fort Clatsop National Historic Site. What a perfect ending to our day watching living historians bring 1805 back giving us a peek into life at the fort during the winter following the Lewis and Clark expedition.

We left the fort and drove to the Astoria Column sitting high overlooking the Pacific, the Columbia River and the surrounding mountains. Unfortunately, the column was under renovations and we were unable to walk to the top and the mural depicting the emigrants coming west was covered in plastic. Still the panoramic view was stunning. We crossed the Astoria bridge and are staying in a cute little suite in the town of South Bend, Washington. Tomorrow, Olympic National Park.
