Tuesday, July 14- Olympic National Park

We stayed at a great little hotel in South Bend, Washington last night. It was a 2 bedroom suite that also had a small kitchen and living room. If you are ever visiting the area I would highly recommend the Sea Quest Motel.  Today we drove to Olympic National Park and our first stop was Ruby Beach. It was a very picturesque beach with many sea protruding from the surf.

A Swainson's Thrush, I think?

Rock cairns were built all along the beach.

Our next stop was the Visitors center at the HOH Rainforest Trail. This was exciting for me because even though I didn't see any first time birds, they were still great birds. The trail was excellent as well. It has been so dry out here, unlike at home, that it has affected some of the scenery. Water levels are down, not only because of the lack of rain this spring and summer, but because they also did not have near the snow last winter as usual.

After we checked in to our room, we drove to Hurricane Ridge. This was a spectacular drive with an even more spectacular view from the top. The highlight though was the doe with her 2 fawns that we saw along side the road on the way up. We also saw deer at the top and another doe with an older fawn on the way back down. The ridge offered great views of the Olympic mountain range. A wonderful way to end the day.
